'A
message to PFO juniors, from Jim'
The amount of time, money and expertise, which
the club have committed recently (and in past years too!) to the
training and educating of club juniors, was handsomely rewarded
in our victory in the Compass Sport Trophy at Askham Fell. Without
your contribution,on Orange and Light Green,we would simply not
have qualified for the final. Well done to all of you,not just to
those who scored vital points, but to those who so willingly represented
the club. Keep up the good work, get to as many events as you can
and keep fit. Final, here we come!!
Congratulations
to all the PFO members who competed at the CST event on Sunday.
The final results show PFO have beated BL!!
A terrific result, and special mentions to all the juniors. It looks
like the Club Night and Junior Squad training is paying dividends.
Thanks also to all the coaches and to Hamish for driving the minibus
to transport many of the juniors.
Well done to you all. Photos now in the gallery - or click

then plan the session accordingly. Adults are also allowed on these
sessions as the training is suitable for both children and adults.

Junior
Training Sessions.
As
part of the continuing development of both SELOC and PFO I am starting
to develop a South Lancs Junior Squad. This will be open to all
juniors of whatever ability. The idea is for juniors to train and
have fun together on a regular basis. It will provide an ideal environment
for those who want to progress as well as those who just want have
fun orienteering together. It is hoped that this will lead to a
junior tour to the Forest of Dean in August. Parents and Club Night
people who want to improve their orienteering will be welcome.
By
junior I would include young people from years 7-13. Year 6 children
may come if they have a parent attending and have done some orienteering
before.
The exercises will be designed to include abilities from yellow
to light green standard unless stated well beforehand.
If
you have any questions please feel free to contact Hamish - 07967

and SELOC held a joint training day at Calf Hey, Haslingden
on 1st Sept. Ten juniors attended and Hamish, George, Jim and Gilian
all helped with the training. The morning session consisted of compass
work + "understanding contours." The juniors found this
very helpful.
After
lunch and an ice cream at the cafe the afternoon session covered
relocation and attack points. The day ended with a short competition.
The next joint junior training day will be on Monday 25th October
(during half term).
Autumn
2009 - Pendle Forest Orienteers have decided to continue their
award scheme for juniors (M/W 16 or under). The scheme is based
on the colour coded courses, if you complete a White, Yellow, Orange
or Light Green course within the colour coded time and achieve this
3 times in an academic or calendar year (eg Sept 2009 - Sept 2010
or by Dec 2010) then you will receive a certificate.
The colour coded badge times are shown with the results when they
are published on the internet. They are worked out by looking at
either achieving 150% of the winning time or being in the top half
of the competitors, which ever allows the greater number of people
to qualify.
At any event where you run one course and then decide to run the
next course up you will be considered non competitive on your 2nd
course.
For
juniors trying the technical courses (when they are planned in place
of Light Green at an event) a certificate will be awarded for completing
three technical courses in a calendar year.
In
2009 the following Juniors achieved an award.
WHITE
:- Charlotte Jesson.
ORANGE
:- Phoebe Jesson, Jake Sutcliffe, Matthew Buckley.
TECHNICAL
:- Paul Burdekin, David Wallis.

On Sept 26th/27th 2009 some of our juniors travelled
down to Sutton Park Birmingham to take part in the Peter Palmer
Relays. The event is held annually and is aimed at club teams comprised
of all standards of Junior orienteers from the M/W12 to M/W18 age
classes. The relay starts one hour before sunrise so the first leg
is run in the dark with the 2nd leg starting in the dark but finishing
in the dawn light. Each team must have at least 2 girls + 2 boys.
