(1/4) Nuttall Park - Spring Series, Feb 24 2018
Date of event: Sat 24th Feb 18
Type of event: Local (D)
Nearest town: Ramsbottom
It was good to see so many competitors, especially on my, I hope, challenging Light Green course, which used the whole of the area. Good too to see new club members and friends from neighbouring clubs. The course was favourably received. Orange also provided quite a challenge. A pity we had so few runners on Yellow and White.
Thanks to George for organising, updating the excellent map and collecting in, to Gillian and Maureen for registration duties, to Mike for help on the Start and help in collecting in, and my partner Jim for invaluable advice.
Well, what a surprise! An unusually late start at 13:00 and glorious sunny weather brought out the crowds, most of whom wanted to run Light Green. We needed to recycle a couple of maps to accommodate all runners. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, barring a couple of small gripes.
Nuttall Park is a good mix of open parkland and surrounding woodland which covers old workings and industrial ruins. The park cafe, run by volunteers, was our registration point and post-event gathering point - thank you for your hospitality.
Our Registration team did a grand job of welcoming and encouraging novices, including new members Adam, Becci and newborn to go round the orange course. As first-timers they received a free entry!
Thanks are due to miscellaneous PFO members for lending a hand. Kite collection was shared and we vacated the park by 16:00. Done and dusted. Thank you all.
Next week - Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham (details here) - suitable for newcomers and prams - forecast cold but dry - starts from 13:00 again. Should be fun, especially for the technical 3 leg, one person relay course.
Pre-event information below here:
Spring Series event 1 of 4.
Important note: In order to avoid a clash with Saturday morning football games and a crush in the car park, we will start later than usual. Registration opens in the park cafe at 12:45 and first starts at 13:00. Please do not arrive before 12:30. We will use the later start time at the next two events in the Spring Series, though event 4, Calf Hey Regional, will return to 10:30 first start time.
Nuttall Park, on the banks of the River Irwell, is half parkland and half woodland. It is a great place to learn the basics of orienteering. For more experienced orienteers, the fringes of the park offer more technical terrain and route choices.
For beginners we offer coaching support to get you started. If time permits, you can try more than one course.

About the area/map
Nuttall Park is part parkland and part woodland extending on both sides of the Irwell river. At the edges of the park there are more technical areas of streams, ravines, rough pastures and old mine workings.
