Simple results

What a FINALE to the series!  Although a trifle damp, you turned out in force to savour the delights of Pendle's pits, gullies, boulders and cragettes.  To make navigation more of a challenge, the MAXI map had no paths marked, thus sharpening compass and pace count discipline.  My apologies to anyone who, at the start line, I failed to remind.

Well done to everyone who braved the weather and to all who said they enjoyed it.  You  made my day, as I was in two minds about calling it off when I saw the forecast.   The only time we've previously cancelled an event for the weather was also at the Nick O'Pendle, when Storm Desmond passed over our NW Night League event.  Heavy rain, winter cold, storm force winds and pitch black!  Today was a mere shower!

Overall series winners and tonight's winners were Steve Wilson SELOC on the MAXI with 260 out of a possible 315 points and on MINI, Sally Ralphson of TRAWDEN ATHLETIC with 155/175.  Just as I had hoped, it was nearly possible to scoop them all.  See their respective route choices in the Image Gallery.
League results now available under Downloadable Documents below.

The series attracted 50 different individuals from 8 different clubs, including CC from Australia!  4 individuals managed to run all 4 events.  Congratulations to the Ellis family for a good turnout and all finishing near the top of the final league standings.

Finally, for the series of four events, our thanks are due to the course planners (Garry, Andy and Danny), the SI/Registration team (Gillian, Carole, Alice and Hamish) and Andy Ellis for his speedy results service.

George Crawford-Smith - NoP planner and series co-ordinator.

About the area/map

Nick O’Pendle

Open moorland.
Nick o'Pendle 1995 map now (2014) updated with numerous new minor paths across the moorland, but water, contour and rock features are unchanged.

On the flanks of the moor the terrain is mostly runnable grassland with man-made mineral extraction detail in many places - spoil heaps, gullies, pits and old tracks.  The small wooded area to the south was felled in 2011.

A major characteristic of the moor top is the peaty soil giving rise to wet grassy ground and scattered seasonal ponds.  Only medium and large ponds are marked.
