Autumn Series (1/4)Stubbylee ParkSat 25 September, 2021

Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

  • Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
  • Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
  • Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
  • National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
  • Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

Pre Event Info

Introductory event for juniors, novices and progressing orienteers. There will be a 'Technical' course for more seasoned competitors.

Important note: This is an AFTERNOON event with first starts at 13:00. The late start enables anyone who participates in other Saturday morning activities to engage in both.

Event 1 of 4 of our Autumn Series at Stubbylee Park, Bacup.

The Yellow and Orange courses are introductory courses specifically aimed at novices and juniors. Experienced orienteers will find the Light Green (Technical) course "interesting" and challenging.

Directions / Parking

From the A681 (from Rawtenstall or Todmorden) or A671 (from Rochdale) turn on to New Line road. Parking will NOT be in Stubbylee Park. There is ample parking in Park Road (OL13 0BZ or What3Words: accordion.offices.certainly) and the industrial estate access road that has a T-junction with Park Road. Both roads are wide. A marshal will direct you.

Do not park on New Line as this is a very busy road.

From your parking location walk along New Line eastwards for 150m to the main park entrance. Take care crossing New Line. Children must be accompanied.

The other park entrance, opposite the Park Road junction, is out of bounds to orienteers.

Once in Stubbylee Park follow the access road curving slightly left. Toilet facilities on your right. Dibber collection and download are here. It is less than 100m to the Start and Finish from here.

Covid security is your personal responsibility.

Map / Terrain

Map scale 1:2500. A4.

There is a one-sided wall (ha-ha) in Stubbylee Park. A ha-ha wall is not visible from above, but is visible from below. This is mapped with the sprint-O symbol of a black line with a half moon black tag on the downhill side. This particular wall is also broken, so the black line is intermittent.

The parks offer fast running, with a mix of paths, buildings, play areas, grassland and woodland. In addition there are some unusual contour, rock and water features, with a steep wooded escarpment to the west. Recent ground works have added new features to the area including a BMX course.

Stubbylee Hall (Grade II listed), the former home of local mill owners, is in the centre of the two parks.
