Planning Events

Reference documents to help planners design good orienteering courses at all levels and colours.

There are a number of documents available to help planners plan good orienteering courses at all levels.

Where to find planning resources

British Orienteering’s Organiser Library is the canonical source for planning reference documents. It includes:

  • Course planning guidance by colour (White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green, Green, Blue, Brown, Black)
  • Coaching support documents for each technical difficulty (TD1 — TD5)
  • The Officials Handbook chapter on orienteering course planning
  • Appendix B (course technical specifications)
  • Planning guidance for older competitors

These supersede the older PFO-hosted copies that used to live on this page. If you need a specific document and can’t find it on the BO library, ask Andy — the committee retains archived copies for reference.
