Regional level event

Explanation of Event levels

  • Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
  • Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
  • Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
  • National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
  • Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

CONTROLLER'S COMMENTS:

What a memorable day! Good weather, hard standing car park, on site catering, challenging courses and great competition, ankle deep river/stream crossings, plus Hannah D's now famous 100m dash to the Finish with prizes!

Emma Taylor's courses picked out the best terrain, giving ample route choices on most legs. The remote Start location ensured that all courses could benefit from interesting terrain around Rowley Lake.

Question? Has anyone ever been to an event where the start boxes were split by a road? Unusual to say the least.

There were no conflicts of interest between anglers and orienteers! Thank you.

All courses could be completed by using bridge crossings of the main River Brun, which was particularly important for YBT competitors, such that no one was disadvantaged whatever the water level. Only Blue had an optional river crossings, on 14 to 15 (see note below) and on leg 20 to 21. I was pleased to notice, on collecting the marker tapes from 20 to 21, that there were many stud marks leading away from the river & fence crossing. Perhaps 50/50 split between the direct river crossing choice and the longer path option?

I received two comments about the map:

The Yvette Baker Trophy and Shield heats were won respectively by the MDOC team and SELOC. Congratulations to both This year's Final is on July 4th at Penllergaer Woods, near Swansea. Good luck to both teams.

Finally, my thanks are due to all the PFO Officials and on the day helpers. Emma for course planning, Hannah for organising, Andy E for acting as YBT Manager and thanks to a host of PFO helpers for everything else.

Many thanks too to Pendle Grill for conjuring up so many hot and cold drinks, and butties of every possible combination. You are welcome any time!

On behalf of PFO, thank you all for a great day!

This is the NWOA Yvette Baker Heat.

Rules for the Yvette Baker competition can be found here.

Brun Valley Forest is an old colliery site with a good path network plus both technical forested and open areas on both sides of the River Brun and its tributaries. All courses can be completed using bridge crossings, though fording the river is also possible. Woodland is a mix of mature forest and more recent plantation. There is ample contour detail.

The nearby parks, included in previous events, will not be used for this YBT event.

There are courses to suit all ages and abilities, with the addition of a Red course for those wanting a longer distance with less difficulty in finding the controls, perfect for club/fell runners and those wishing to stretch their legs!

This event is open to all and no experience is necessary, there will be club members on hand to explain any questions you may have!
