Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

  • Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
  • Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
  • Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
  • National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
  • Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

Organiser's comments:

Thanks to all that ventured to Calf Hey on Saturday, an area not used for a while and an area worthy of a Regional.

Both myself and planner Emma spent many hours wandering the different terrain for course ideas and map updates. There have been positive comments about the courses Emma created, where she tried to make the most of the interesting areas without having you jockeying up and down the slopes needlessly. The courses were originally planned in reverse order but were changed to offer a mental challenge at the end which we hope kept people on their toes until the Finish.

As Organiser, I must pass on my thanks to all of the many PFO’ers that volunteered (and offered to)! It is the largest and most complex event I have organised yet and was a challenge with the Start/Finish/Car Park and Download all being separate and ‘manning’ all the forts, making sure people had time to run and keeping others active. Four members offered their help without themselves running, showing the team spirit we have at the club, with the remaining twelve helpers managing to help and fit in a run! It was a long day out of the hills, but made all the worthwhile with the numbers that attend ‘just’ a local event. Thank you for your kind comments.

Directions / Parking

Parking is easily accessible via the B6232 (previously A6077) Grane Road (50mph speed limit and cameras in place!) which links J5 of the M65 to the A56 at Haslingden. But do take care as this is a fast and busy road. Nearest postcode is BB4 4AT. What3words precise coordinate: ///soggy.parsnips.fountain

Parking will be in fields at Clough Head information centre/cafe. Park as directed.
Please do not park in the public cafe car park (that you will pass through) unless you have small children or mobility needs.
Dibber collection and Download will be at or near the cafe.

Should the need arise, overflow parking will be in two wide lay-bys about 500m west of the main car park entrance (lay-bys on both sides of the road - so no need to make a U-turn). The road here is wide but do take care walking on the verge to Dibber issue/Download.

Map / Terrain

The Calf Hey map is 1:7500 for all courses.

Calf Hey is a really attractive area with a good mix of terrain including coniferous and deciduous forest, open moorland, old field network and mineral extraction pits. Challenging at all levels.

There are cattle in the field areas to the north and west of the competition area and have freedom to roam most of this area. They have never been a problem in the past. You may see none, but if cattle are encountered, to avoid disturbance, please give them a wide berth. We recommend at least 25m.

Map notes:
1). One large area of woodland has within it a patchwork of fallen trees due to old age and/or windblow. Areas that are easily traversed, though slow, are shown with the wide green pinstripe symbol. Areas that are very slow or impassable are shown with the narrow pinstripe symbol - best avoided!

2. There are several streams that run is chasms that may be up to 10m deep! Instead of the usual blue line, streams in these areas are marked with a wide purple line to indicate the stream is uncrossable. Steep terrain on either side must also be avoided. Take great care.
All courses, except Yellow, will be competing near to these features. Only cross streams where they are blue on the map.
