Regional level event

Explanation of Event levels

  • Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
  • Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
  • Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
  • National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
  • Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

This is a Regional event using the areas around Hurstwood and Cant Clough reservoirs. The area comprises some re-wooded land, the intricate detail of well vegetated spoil heaps generated by sandstone quarrying of the nineteenth century and rough open moorland beyond.

Safety: Whistles will be compulsory, as the area is rugged and exposed in parts. In the case of bad weather, cagoules may be required. Please come prepared.

An emergency phone number will be printed on the map. Please consider taking a mobile phone with you. In case of injury, the closest hospital is Burnley General (Minor injuries unit) Casterton Ave, Burnley, BB10 2PQ. The nearest A&E is Royal Blackburn Hospital, Haslingden Road, Blackburn BB2 3HH.

Map / Terrain

Map notes:

The area benefitted from being remapped for the Senior Home Internationals in 2018 and recent updates have been added for this event. The contour detail is accurate and can be used reliably. Green screen is used to differentiate between runnable tussock and tussocks with long grass which impede progress. Small crags marked on the map includes some small sections of what look like man made retaining walls. For clarity, only the most significant areas of rock piles are marked on the map. The area is a popular choice for mountain bikers and as a results new paths they create may not be accurately represented. There will be taped sections on the yellow course to help navigate away from the busy busiest area used by mountain bikers. Supervision of younger children is strongly recommended.

Terrain notes:
Hurstwood North is the area used for the SHI and National events in 2018 and offers quality orienteering. The area is predominantly open moorland containing two large reservoirs, Hurstwood and Cant Clough. Some mature coniferous forest and more recently planted broad leafed trees provide variety. Of note are the sections of open terrain where well vegetated mounds and depressions are a major feature; a legacy of the reservoir construction in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These features could be likened to sand dunes in the technical challenge they pose. There are a number of well-defined tracks, however in more technical areas distinct paths are in short supply. The area sits at an altitude of around 250 to 300 metres above sea level.Despite much of the terrain's technical nature it has provided fast running on previous events. As a consequence course lengths are at the upper end of the range. On the highest ground, which most courses avoid, expect tussocks.
