Regional level event
Explanation of Event levels
- Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
- Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
- Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
- National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
- Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

Organiser / Planner comments (Kay Hawke/Emma Taylor)
Thanks to everybody that attended the event at weekend, we were thrilled to welcome people from across the World to a newly mapped area! Taking on the planning quite late in the day meant many early morning runs around the estates, but the more we explored the more we realised how great all of the cut throughs and linked estates were. The original courses explored further to the eastern end (not on the final competitor map) where again there is great interest but working with the Controller it was decided that the lengths of the courses were just too long for a Middle Distance event preceding a Long Distance Urban. We apologise for the slight incorrect placing of the control in the park which was moved during the race, though still within the control circle, it's lesser visibility in this place meant some competitors could not see it on their route to it. The Controller decided to void the legs affecting it.
The Friends of Ightenhill Park group have been brilliant in welcoming us to the area (not always the case in orienteering) and not only encourage the whole community to get involved but also provided a brilliant base for everybody to enjoy food, drink and their offerings of additional stands. We are looking forward to having another event from the base again in 2025 using the southern end of the newly mapped area which was not explored in Saturday's event.
Mapper/Controller comments (Eddie Speak)
Apologies to those affected by the control mentioned, I realised that something wasn’t quite right, when checking, but got distracted by another issue and forgot. I moved it, thankfully, before the juniors (course 7) arrived. After comparing the results with and without the leg either side removed I decided that it had a significant effect on the leading runners therefore the legs were excluded.
Although not technical, the many paths and alleys allow for the planning of route choice legs.
The leading times on some courses are a little short although all were based on the recommended ratio to course 1; this was based on 30 min for a top runner (3:30 m/km).
RouteGadget
Is a web browser app for sharing and comparing orienteering routes. You can draw your own route or upload a GPS track from your watch. It also allows you to watch an animated replay with a simulated mass start.

It is also Event 5 of the NWUL 2024.
For additional activities whilst in the area, Ightenhill is set below Pendle Hill (20 minute drive away) and also the Pendle Sculpture Trail which explores the history of the famous Pendle Witches!
Closer by is Gawthorpe Hall, a historic National Trust property, which is also a beautiful place for a wander (10 minute drive away).
For those looking for a warm-up, the local parkruns closest to the event are Hyndburn, Burnley (Towneley Park) and Colne (Pendle).
