Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

  • Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
  • Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
  • Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
  • National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
  • Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

Directions / Parking

From the A681 (from Rawtenstall or Todmorden) or A671 (from Rochdale) turn on to New Line road. Parking will NOT be in Stubbylee Park. There is ample parking in Park Road (OL13 0BZ or What3Words: accordion.offices.certainly) and the industrial estate access road that has a T-junction with Park Road. Both roads are wide. A marshal will direct you.
Do not park on New Line as this is a very busy road.

From your parking location walk along New Line eastwards for 150m to the main park entrance. The park entrance opposite the Park Road junction is out of bounds to orienteers. Take care crossing New Line. Children must be accompanied.

Once in Stubbylee Park follow the access road, Toilet facilities are on your right in the little brick building. The road then curves slightly left leading to a barn next to the cafe. Dibber collection and download here.

There are two Starts, Lower and Upper:

Map / Terrain

Longer courses will start at Lee Quarry and finish in the parks. Shorter courses will only be in the parks.

Lee Quarry is very technical, with some fiendish navigation due to the multitude of contour detail and black features. It also boasts a network of mountain bike trails. Off-piste, the area is either very runnable, or impossibly slow through boulder fields.

The parks on the other hand provide fast terrain, ideal for snappy urban style orienteering. There is a good path network and some hidden gems.
