Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

  • Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
  • Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
  • Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
  • National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
  • Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

Summer Snook-O! Our June Series of 4 Snook-O events got cut short, so we've added in a late summer event to take it back to 4! This time we are at Memorial Park, Padiham.

Summer evening Score event mixing orienteering with the game of snooker! Get as many points as you can in the time limit by visiting/potting red and colour checkpoints building up your score. Can you 'clear the table' in the time limit and make the highest break?

Planner's Comments:

What a turnout! Not bad for a mid-August event when so many PFOers were away on holiday. 50+ competitors showed up, with 46 teams completing the course - solos, pairs, trios and at least one foursome!
Special mention to those coming from further afield - members of CLARO, DEE, MDOC, SELOC, SHUOC and SROC, and a surprise ex-PFO visitor from Australia!

Make a small area, bigger! The Snook-O format is ideal for areas that are not large enough to support traditional format events. The necessary SI software, developed buy/for PFO, is now available to other clubs.

Memorial Park is well featured, with classic parkland in the middle parts (paths, grassland, playground and scattereed trees) plus a fringe of more interesting terrain, all scattered across a steppening hill down to the River Calder.

In truth this park is too small, with 14 competitors managing to scoop the maximum score of 115. More decisions and route choices have to me made if the maximum cannot be achieved.

Special mention must go to Oliver's Cafe, who opened especially for our event (normally closing c. 4:00PM). They provided special price hot drinks and cake, as well as some hot flatbread meals. Most competitors bought food and drink after running, so trade was a bit slow to start, then very busy at the end. Unknown to us, the cafe is not allowed, by the terms of their lease, to serve food after 8:00PM, so they started winding down at 7:30. Only early starters were finished in time to take advantage of the full menu.

The most important factor was that the cafe holds a key to the public toilets, which they opened for us for the duration. Almost everyone took advantage!

Thank you to Padiham Council for permission, our hosts for grub and toilets and to all competitios who made the journey. Till the next time.
