Local level event

Explanation of Event levels

  • Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
  • Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
  • Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
  • National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
  • Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

Organiser's Comments:

It was a grand day out! No rain, no cold, and surprisingly dry underfoot considering recent rain. There were 85 competitors for an event billed as 'Introductory', with no TD5 (very difficult) courses on offer. Of the 85 competitors, 47 hired dibbers, showing that more than half were relative newcomers to orienteering. Special thanks go to Danny Allen PFO for planning all the courses.

We should have warned Red competitors that the course map was double-sided. In the control descriptions there is a new symbol for "Flip map over", which was introduced on New Year's Day 2024. At least two comptitors ran to the Finish when they should have turned over, when there were still 5 controls to go. Sorry about that.

Young or old, expert or novice, everyone seems to have had a good time! Thank you for attending. See you next time. See the Events section of this website.

My special thanks are due to all those willing club helpers who put in a shift today, while a large sector of the club were away on winter breaks. Judith and Ben for computer services and results. Wendy, Mary, Ginny and Helen, for managing the Start, plus Lucy and Dave, plus others for control collecting. Nothing went missing.

All round a very good event.

George Crawford-Smith - Organiser.
