Towneley Park Night-OWed 25 February, 2026
Local level event
Explanation of Event levels
- Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
- Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
- Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
- National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
- Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.
Join Pendle Forest Orienteers for a Night-O at Towneley Park, offering a fun and tactical navigation challenge in a welcoming setting. With start windows available between 6.30–7.00pm, this is a great opportunity to test your navigation skills after dark, whether you’re coming along solo or with a friend.
Three courses are on offer, catering for a wide range of abilities. The Easy course (TD2, approx. 3.5km - as the crow flies) uses controls on prominent features and is ideal for those newer to orienteering or night events. The Intermediate course (TD3, approx. 4km) introduces more route choice and will involve leaving some paths. The Tricky course (TD4, approx. 4.5km as the crow flies) is designed for those with some experience, with more complex navigation and decision-making required.
Checkpoints are only revealed when you start, and courses are completed in number order. The courses are set mainly in the northern part of Towneley Park, making use of the old nine-hole golf course area, with a mix of paths, runnable forest, interesting contour features and open parkland. The varied terrain offers plenty of features to navigate by and is a great chance to explore this part of the park in the dark.
This is an excellent introduction to night orienteering, with something to challenge more experienced orienteers too. All abilities are welcome, and you can take it at your own pace while enjoying the technical challenge of navigating at night.
Each single competitor or team will need a dibber (your own, or hired at £1 on entering).
For age rules concerning junior participation, see 'Entry Details' below.
