June Series, event (4/4) FINALEWitton Park, BlackburnWed 28 June, 2023
Local level event
Explanation of Event levels
- Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
- Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
- Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
- National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
- Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

Series Organiser Report:
It is now 11 years since PFO started to offer a June Score series. Back then we used the standard score format, but with second maps for the smaller areas. We used pin punches and manually produced results. The very first event at Towneley South was preceded by a biblical deluge, that reduced the field to just 4 runners. One of them was Steve Wilson, still running the format today!
Our 2023 June Series has been unusual in that we have used 2 different formats, Snook-O and Ratchet Score, Week-by-week League results have not been published because of the big difference in overal maximum scores available. Howerer, despite that, and out of interest, I've calculated a league list (see below) based on the sum of all participants scores. Anyone who competed in all 4 weeks has a big advantage over those who did not. Those in the know, will not be surprised to learn that John Embrey came top of the list with total score of 799 points out of a possible maximum of 860 points for the 4 events.
I would like to thank every one of the 69 individuals and teams that took part in one event or more, and thank our 3 rookie planners, David Bliss, Hannah Dabinett and Steve White for their hard work. Apart from the prickly and stingy June undergrowth, I think everyone will have enjoyed their courses. A good training run, with quite a lot of orienteering thrown in.
Additional thanks must go to the SI registration, dibber issue, timing and results team who have done a cracking job of getting results out in a jiffy.
The Wednesday Evening June Series is already in PFO's event calendar for 2024, though the format and choice of areas has yet to be decided. Any suggestions?
