Local level event
Explanation of Event levels
- Training events are non competitive events used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport.
- Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Most clubs run some 'mini series' throughout the year as local mid week events.
- Regional events attract participants from around the local Region.
- National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away,
- Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships or the annual JK competition.

(This is the revised version. One competitor was credited with a MIDI run, whereas they actually ran MAXI. Now corrected. No changes in the top half of the league tables.)
Event Coordinators Report:
It is done! PFO's Ratchet Score series concluded yesterday. Lee Quarry, Alkincoats Park, Sunnyhurst Wood and Peel Park (and the Coppice) were worthy partners in our annual June series. Each area different in character but the same in format for all, effectively 3 score events one after the other over the same area. On the MAXI course, competitors must visit all or any of the easier 7x10 point controls before moving to medium 7x15s, before harder 7x20s, with no backsliding permitted, all in under 45 mins (60 mins for the FINALE) before tough penalties kick in. The MIDI course ratchets just the 10s and 15s.
The ratchet format makes a small area bigger, so it's ideal for 1:5000 areas on A4 maps, or small parts of larger areas.
In addition, for the first time, we added a MINI Orange line course using the same controls plus a few extras. This has opened up the event for younger competitors.
Here are some statistics for the 4 events in 2021:
- 180 competitive runs: LQ 48, AP 34, SW 51, PP 47.
- 81 different competitors took part: PFO 46, SROC 8, MDOC 7, SELOC 7, EPOC 5, DEE 1.
- Points deducted from 13 competitors for taking controls out of order: 11 on MAXI, only 2 on MIDI
- MAXI Series podium: James Logue EPOC 847 points, John Embrey SROC 840, Steve Wilson PFO 820, out of a possible maximum of 945 points.
- MIDI Series podium: Garry Alexander PFO 402 points, Hannah Darbinett PFO 401, Jo Davis 370, out of a possible maximum of 525.
- MINI Orange: Billy Cole M14 PFO had the highest placings over 3 events.
As you can see it was a damn near close run thing for both MAXI and MIDI. Congratulations to our winners.
Next year, 2020, will be our 10th running of our June series. Watch for details.
Organiser's View:
2021 has been a good year for variety (LQ - intricate, AP - fast, SW - steep, PP - varied terrain). All similar in technical difficulty, though Alkincoats had fewer contours, and tough June undergrowth, except at Lee Quarry where there is none! Throughout the whole series only one competitor managed a clean sweep of all controls in under 45 minutes, though that was made difficult by a couple of misplaced controls. The objective should be that only one competitor can make a clean sweep, so that everyone else has decisions to make.
Even though having a controller would have prevented the misplaced controls, I think the ease of planning and informality should be retained. Making these weekday events into mini-regional events would detract from the essence of simplicity, informality and enjoyment for planner and competitor alike.
We hope you have enjoyed participating this year. Roll on our 10th anniversary series in 2022. We will make an effort to improve control placement.
